Tapas, Discipline. Also, Tapasya, Duty. This is the 3rd aspect of the second limb of Yoga, Niyamas, Observations.

Tapasya. Duty. Literally means ‘Produced by Heat’. Purity forged by fire in the crucible of life. Listen within and without for guidance. The Guide is always present, inseparable from yourself. Always do your duty without delay. This means discipline and paying attention to every thought, word, and action.

Repeat what you observe

And test yourself to see if you did it correctly. Memory works when you are in the Present Moment to experience each event clearly and completely, without distraction. Test yourself in the short term, intermediate term, and long term. Sometimes, the memory will float to the top of your awareness if you are patient for a moment. Over time, the length of time required for the memory to appear in your consciousness will be shorter and shorter, until it is immediate without any delay.

Examples

Any event that is movement.

Dance, Martial Arts, Climbing, Sports, Swimming, Walking, Running, Acting, Music, Drawing, Driving, any activity that has movement.

Repeat the exact moves and see if you got it right. Record the original event and your recall repeat performances and compare the two for your test. Repeat the test at intervals. In an hour, the next day, the next week, the next month, the next year, 5 years later, 10 years later, 20 years later, 50 years later, etc.

Any event that is sound.

I have my Present Moment Singing sessions. Also, any instrument. Repeat what the leader does. Pass the lead to another person and follow their performance.

What I have found in practice is that many people can only repeat one to three steps, before they forget. For me, when I studied Bansuri, the classical bamboo flute of North Indian Hindustani music with Bansuri Master Pandit Malhar Kulkarni; I found that I could only remember 5 or 6 notes, then 7 to 8 notes, and steady improvement with practice and being in the moment with my listening and observational skills. After about 3 weeks, I could remember 25 to 30 or more notes without error. This includes many elements of music performance, including rhythm, intonation, volume, and pauses, emotional impact. Before that, and afterwards, I studied vocal music, and other instruments and many different genres of music, from western classical to jazz, Latin jazz, reggae, rock and roll, disco, and many others. And composing and performing my own songs.

Acting on stage and on camera with spoken dialog, and remembering the other actors’ dialog, entrances and exits, blocking, fight scenes.

Please note that any event will normally have multiple sensory and timing elements involving the senses – sight, hearing, speech, touch, smell, taste, proprioception, intuition, and the physical, emotional and spiritual centers of awareness, i.e., not limited to the chakras and any other system of thought. There are many senses. All of them are important.

Any event that is reading.

Read a book, news article, short story, your own writing, a road sign.

Repeat back your recollection of what you read to a friend.

Check to see if your memory is accurate.
